Ethiopia - Segera Lot 3 - 250g

Our first ever coffee at Abstract is from Segera Washing Station in the Bensa area of Sidama Zone, Ethiopia.

Please Note: All coffee is sold as whole bean only. All orders received before midnight on a Saturday are roasted packed & shipped on the Monday.

Don't forget, there's free shipping on all UK orders. That way, there's no nasty surprises at checkout!

This is a very clean and bright cup that is a beautiful example of high quality washed Ethiopian coffee.

Black tea gives way to lemon acidity and a refined white sugar sweetness.

We paid $2.75 per lb.* for this coffee which is 96.4% more than the Fair Trade price and 170.1% more than the average C-Price for 2019.

*This was the price paid to producers before any shipping, haulage, storage and export/import fees.

Segera washing station is owned by Daye Bensa Coffee Export and sits at 1,980 m.a.s.l. The coffee cherries from this lot were purchased from smallholder farmers nearby who have between 0.5 and 3 hectares of land. The land is managed organically with compost and the coffee is often grown within the native forest. This lot is made up of heirloom varietals, mainly of type 74158 which is a selection from the Jimma research centre. This varietal was selected from wild plants in the Metu-Bishari forest in the Illuababora zone in Western Ethiopia.

The Processing

The coffee delivered to the segera washing station is pulped, fermented under water and then washed before being placed on raised beds to dry for around two weeks. At this site the team are very selective about cherry quality ensuring only the ripest are bought and make sure the coffee is dried slowly with a skin drying phase to start the process.
