We're very pleased to introduce this wonderful naturally processed organic microlot from Mustefa Abakano's small farm near Agaro in the Jimma Region of Western Ethiopia.
This is an intensely sweet and fruity cup. It just oozes juicy, fresh strawberries.
We paid $3.25 per lb.* for this coffee which is 132.1% more than the Fair Trade price and 219.2% more than the average C-Price for 2019.
*This was the price paid to producers before any shipping, haulage, storage and export/import fees.
Mustefa's farm is located 2,040 m.a.s.l. and is planted with various varietal selections from the Jimma research centre. He has recently registered as an exporter in order to start selling his coffee directly to buyers, which he is now able to do since the changes to regulation in Ethiopia. This means our importers are able to trade directly with Mustefa and offer him a better price for the coffee. He has also set up a small wet mill where he can process his farm’s coffee himself, giving him more control over his own crop.
Mustefa seperates each individual microlot from his farm for individual processing. This is extremely unusual in Ethiopia, where farmers usually deliver their cherries to a centralised wet mill and get paid for their daily deliveries. At that stage, their production is usually blended with the other daily deliveries from multiple other farmers, and processed as a much larger lot with little traceability to each of its contributing farmers.
The importers we work with have a team in Addis who are able to work directly with small producers such as Mustefa. With changes to Ethiopia's export regulations comes more opportunity to drive a quality based approach through direct relationships like this one, as they are able to work with Mustefa on cherry selection, drying and farm management, covering all aspects of best quality practises. By working directly they are also able to make the supply chain much more efficient and maximise the amount of money that goes back to Mustefa.
After harvesting the cherries some are selected for a washed process and others, like this microlot, are selected for a natural process where they are dried on semi-shaded raised beds near his house.
